Susan Kare designed the original Apple Macintosh system and application icons. Many of the visual metaphors are still in use today. I came across this information via Design Facts.
A couple of years ago, my good lady and I decided to head over to the Type Museum in Stockwell. When we got there, it was obvious it had closed down. There was no sign of life. We had a nose around and stumbled across a chap who was working on a matrix. He told us the museum was closed but they still make matrices. We went downstairs and saw Duncan Avery. Duncan has worked for Monotype his whole life and use to take the tours in the museum. We asked if we could have a look around. Not only did he let us in, he gave us a guided tour. It was an extremely inspiring day. It is a real shame the library is closed now, it is important to remember our heritage.
I was in the record shop in Stoke Newington at the weekend, was about to leave and then spotted ‘Disraeli Gears’ tucked away in the corner. I’ve wanted this Cream album for a while now but it has always been too pricey for me. I managed to pick this up for £8, a real bargin. It has one of my favourite Cream tracks on it, Strange brew.
I’ve been a bit obsessed with listening to Andrew Weatherall recently, since my chum Smitherz introduced him to me. Rotters golf club has a great double gone mix on it and there is also a good mix on Red Bull Radio. Look forward to seeing him play on thursday night and in the future.
I think the guardian gave this film out for free a couple of years ago, which was when I first saw it. I recently watched it again, its a great short film featuring, Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann. (The two actors re-teaming up for the first time since the cult classic ‘Withnail & I’ that helped each of them get their breaks in the business.)
The film is about, ‘A wrong turn in the middle of the night tips the balance of power between
two influential men in a way that will affect their relationship forever.’
You can buy this off iTunes and watch a clip here.
I first heard Cate Le Bon on the ‘Bearded Ladies’ compilation (Finders Keepers) via Smitherz.
I recently checked out her latest album and it is stunning. Her voice is beautiful. I would love to go to one of her gigs.
I really like this chaps work. Nice to see spray paint used in an original way. On his site you can see how he got his inspiration.
“The ideas for the artworks have actualized while processing time spent absorbing French Culture, exploring the City Of Lights, the vibrant colors, the exaggerated geometry, and the diverse architecture and fashion of Paris.”
A great series of images from Kevin Bauman on the abandoned houses in Detroit. I didn’t realize
how bad the sitution was. Prints of these are available on his site.
“Detroit has enough room to hold the land mass of San Francisco, Boston, and Manhattan
Island, yet the population has fallen from close to 2 million citizens, to most likely less
than 800,000. With such a dramatic decline, the abandoned house problem is not likely to
go away any time soon.”
Recently bought the new Four Tet album. I have always been a fan of his but this album has made me become obsessed. I can’t stop playing it. The last time I saw Four Tet was with Steve Reid, that was 3 years ago. My friends and I were in a trance afterwards it was intense. Look forward to seeing him play again, hopefully at the village underground in April. Does anyone know who did the album artwork?
